Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine drug that has properties including anxiolytic (to treat anxiety and its physical and psychological symptoms), anticonvulsant (to treat epileptic seizures), muscle relaxant (decreases the muscle tone and affects skeletal muscles function), and hypnotic (to induce sleep like in insomnia treatment).

It is derivatively a chlorinated of nitrazepam. Clonazepam pharmacological property is the enhancement of GABA neurotransmitter through modulation of the GABA. It is classified as benzodiazepine that has a high potency. Its slow onset has a peak four hours after ingestion.

It usually has eighteen to fifty hours long elimination half-life so that it is considered as one of long acting benzodiazepine groups. When it is compared to nitrazepam that shows effectiveness in treating west syndrome patients or an age dependant epilepsy, it shows that it has less effectiveness as an anticonvulsant in bringing infantile seizures under control. It is mainly prescribed for treating patients with acute epilepsy, giving short term treatment for panic disorder patients and acute mania.

Also, it can be differentiated as very common, less common, occasional, rare, and long term effects. A very common effect that is usually experienced by the patients who make use of it is including drowsiness, interference, and euphoria. Drowsiness is a condition when somebody has a strong desire to sleep or in a state of near sleep. Sometimes, people who get drowsiness can sleep in a unusually long period of time.
